Former Batangas Vice Gov. Richard “Ricky” Recto has died, his brother Deputy Speaker Ralph Recto announced Tuesday.
“Words are hard to come by to express the sorrow of losing him, but we take comfort in our fond memories of him to overcome the pain we feel,” Ralph said in a statement.
Ralph did not give his brother’s cause of death, but initial media reports quoted the Eastern Police District as saying that Ricky was found dead with a gunshot wound at his house in Valle Verde in Pasig.
Ralph expressed appreciation for those who sent kind words and prayers, but said the family is asking for the time and space to grieve in private.
They may later hold a simple memorial, he said.
“But we do recognize that Ricky had served as a national athlete and as an elected official, so a simple memorial is being discussed, the details of which may be announced soon,” he said.
Ricky, aside from being a former vice governor, was also part of the Philippine shooting team and had won a gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games.
Ricky had planned to run as Batangas governor in the May 2022 elections, but withdrew his candidacy in April.
