The local government of Mulanay has installed artificial reefs in two barangays in the town.
The artificial coral reefs were installed in Barangay San Isidro and Barangay Sagongon.
Artificial coral reefs are usually built to protect, enhance, or restore components of marine ecosystems.
Mulanay Mayor Aries Aguirre personally installed some of the artificial reefs in Barangay Sagongon.
Aguirre said he was saddened that he did not even see any fish, and only saw crowns of thorns starfish, when he went diving for the installation of the artificial reefs.
“Medyo nalungkot ako nong pag-dive ko kase talagang kailangang-kailangan ng artificial reefs doon sa area kase wala man lang ako nakitang isda sa ilalim; marami roong crown of thorns,” he said.
He hailed the project to install the artificial reefs, which was initiated by the Provincial Agriculturist.
“I hope don sa mga kababayan ko d’yan sa Brgy Sagongon at San Isidro, yong samahan ng mga mangingisda, ay dapat pagyamanin ninyo ang bigay sa atin ng probinsya sapagkat ito po ay makakatulong sa inyo lalong-lalo na mga maliliit na mangingisda,” he said.
