San Pedro to put up Sampaguita Park and Nursery, training center
San Pedro Mayor Art Mercado is hoping to revive the city’s sampaguita industry.
In connection with this, Mercado said the local government would put up a Sampaguita Park and Nursery, along with a training center in the city.
Mercado recently visited the barangay where these would be located.
He said these facilities would provide assistance and support to sampaguita growers and vendors, and would be used to develop more sampaguita products.
“Ang proyekto pong ito ay naglalayon na makapagbigay ng pangkabuhayan sa ating mga local sampaguita growers and vendors, buhaying muli ang sampaguita industry kung saan tayo nakilala dati, at tuklasin ang iba pang produkto na maaring gawin mula sa sampaguita,” he said.
But more than providing a source of livelihood, he said these facilities would seek to protect and strengthen San Pedro’s local identity as the “Sampaguita Capital of the Philippines.”
This was important for progress, he said.
“Ngayong Buwan ng Kasaysayan, kailangan nating balikan ang mga cultural symbols kung saan tayo nakilala. Mahalaga ang pangangalaga sa ating kultura at kasaysayan, dahil may papel ito sa pag-usad at pag-unlad ng isang bayan,” he said.
He also said the Sampaguita Park and Nursery would be a safe and open space for all.
