Nine areas in Batangas test positive for high levels of arsenic

Jun 6, 2022 @ 9:45

A total of nine areas in Batangas province have been found with high levels of the carcinogenic substance arsenic in their water, the Batangas public information office reported.

This was based on data from the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force on Arsenic – Taal Volcano Protected Landscape, the Batangas PIO said.

The nine areas are in Laurel, Balete, San Nicolas, Mataas na Kahoy, Alitagtag, Sta. Teresita, Lemery, Taal and Tanauan City.

“Ang lebel ng arsenic sa mga nabangit na bayan ay mas mataas sa standard o normal level, na 10 parts per billion,” the Batangas PIO said on Facebook.

The monitoring of the arsenic level in nearby areas continues.

The presence of arsenic was first detected in the water supply after the eruption of Taal Volcano on January 12, 2020, it said.

Arsenic could cause cancer and skin diseases, and could affect babies and unborn children as well, according to Dr. Rhodora Reyes, Batangas Medical Center Toxicology Center chief.

It enters the body through the ingestion of contaminated water.

The Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has set aside P3.5 million from its fund for the conduct of more water tests.
