Cabuyao Mayor Mel Gecolea visits aquaponics farm, sings its praises

Cabuyao Mayor Mel Gecolea has been convinced that aquaponics is the way to go.
Gecolea recently visited the city’s Farm 1: Model Integrated Farming System to harvest tilapia and lettuce from the aquaponics system.
Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics, or the growing of plants without soil.
It seeks to grow fish and plants in one integrated system, he explained.
He said the tilapia and lettuce harvested from the aquaponics system is sent to the Cabuyao Malasakit Producers Cooperative, whose members include the farmworkers at the aquaponics facility.
Only rice is missing from the aquapomics system to produce a complete meal, he quipped.
