Bill seeks declaration of Our Lady of Candelaria Parish in Silang as tourist site
Lawmakers have pushed for the passage of a measure that will declare Our Lady of Candelaria Parish in Silang, Cavite a tourist destination.
Under House Bill 9551, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and other concerned agencies will prioritize the development of the immediate environs of the church.
A development plan will be created within one year from the enactment of the measure into law.
The Church was established on February 3, 1595 under the patronage of St. Diego of Alcala.
It was dedicated to Nuestra Señora De Candelaria in 1640.
The parish is considered as the oldest standing structure of colonial baroque architecture in Cavite.
The Church was given a historic marker in 2008 by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
The church complex and its altarpiece or retablo were declared as National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2017.
The House Committees on Tourism and on Appropriations have endorsed the passage of the measure. It was approved by the House of Representatives on second reading last month.
