The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a measure declaring Wawa dam in Rodriguez, Rizal a tourist destination.

House Bill 8965, authored by Rizal Rep. Fidel Nograles was approved with 179 affirmative, no negative and six abstention votes.

Under the measure, the Department of Tourism (DOT), with the help of concerned agencies will be tasked to prepare a tourism development plan including the construction, installation and maintenance of facilities and infrastructures that shall enhance, develop and promote ecotourism in the area within one year from the enactment of the law.

Nograles said the Wawa dam has its historical significance and constructed over the Marikina River in 1909 as the only source of water supply for the people of the nearby areas.

“Though it has lost its very importance, Wawa dam remains to be a favorite destination of nature lovers, mountain hikers and bikers,” said Nograles. “Developing and enhancing the beauty of this natural resource and abandoned reservoir, will surely generate investment and foreign exchange in the area, while providing employment opportunities for the local government and residence within the area.”
