Elpidio Barzaga urges politikos: Improve athletes’ perks instead of quarreling over SEA Games
Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga has urged his fellow politikos to stop bickering over the 30th Southeast Asian Games as it is already fast approaching.
In a statement, Barzaga said politikos should work towards improving the incentives received by Filipino athletes who will win in the biennial athletic meet. He suggested that gold medalists be given P1,000,000; silver medalists with P500,000; and P300,000 for bronze medalists.
At present, gold medalists in SEA Games receive P300,000; while silver medalists get P150,000; and P60,000 for bronze medalists.
Meanwhile, Asian Game winners shall be given P2,000,000 for gold medalists; P1,000,000 for silver medalists; and P400,000 for bronze medalists.
Should the present funds for incentives be insufficient, Barzaga said a portion of the proposed 2020 national budget could be realigned for the athletes’ sake.
