Pidi Barzaga proposes no-work Mondays for private sector employees, Friday off for gov’t workers
Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga has proposed a novel way to help ease traffic in Metro Manila: Letting employees in both the public and private sector work for only four days a week.
Under Barzaga’s proposal, government employees work from Mondays to Thursdays; starting from 7AM to 6PM, with an hour break time from 12NN to 1PM.
Meanwhile, Barzaga said employees from the private sector can work on a Tuesday-to-Friday schedule; starting also from 7AM to 6PM and with one-hour break time.
He said both work schedules will allow employees to log in the required 40 hours per work week, since they will be working 10 hours daily.
Barzaga said a four-day workweek will minimize traffic in Metro Manila because there will be less employees commuting or driving their cars.
“Considering also the early time of work at 7AM, employees will have to wake up and travel earlier than usual, thereby easing the rush hour. Same is true with their later time of going home at 6PM,” he said.
Aside from savings in terms of time spent in traffic and the cost of traveling, Barzaga said a four-day workweek will allow employees to spend more time with their families.
