Danny Suarez asks DTI to stop importing palm oil as copra price dip continues
House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez has asked the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to stop importing palm oil as the price of copra continues to decline.
Suarez recently filed House Resolution 2519 asking DTI to halt palm oil importation and raise copra prices to P25 per kilo.
The Quezon lawmaker said the move will help make “an equitable playing field for domestic coconut producers.”
At present, Suarez said the farmgate price for copra has dipped to P15 per kilo, a far cry from the P30 to P40 per kilo a few years ago.
“This economic situation affects the livelihood of the country’s coconut farmers, which are mostly living in poverty,” he said.
