Danilo Suarez eyes Switzerland’s SGS to take charge of Customs
Quezon 3rd District Representative Danilo Suarez called on the government to once again tap the Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) of Switzerland to take charge of the inspection and valuation of imported goods in the Bureau of Customs.
The SGS was engaged by the Philippine government in the 1990s.
The Quezon politiko said that while he supported President Rodrigo Duterte’s order for the military to “take over” Customs, he explained that this is not the perfect solution.
“Military participation is intended to be temporary,” Suarez said.
“While this may take a while to eliminate, the takeover of the military is hoped to make a difference and a huge improvement in the processes in the bureau,” he added.
Suarez also said the country needs “immediate solutions.”
“The seizure of illegal drugs at the point of entry is crucial and beneficial to the war against illegal drugs. At the same time, cleansing the agency of its evils will result in efficient management and strict implementation of the law,” he said.
