Erin Tañada urges DAR to meet ARBs in Negros Occidental

Oct 22, 2018 @ 16:46

Former Quezon 4th District Representative Erin Tañada called on the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to meet with all Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARB) in Negros Occidental following the killing of nine farmers in Sagay City.

The Quezon politiko said DAR “needs to make a final determination on which of them can be placed in possession immediately.”

Tañada also called on the agency to “take concrete steps to install them on their lands.”

“For those CLOA holders who have some legal barrier to their possession, the DAR should support them in their legal initiatives. But it also has to explain to those ARBs why they cannot yet be placed in possession,” he said.

“Without this intervention, ARBs will continue to risk their lives trying to enter the land awarded to them, and the erstwhile landowners will always use (often deadly) force to repel them. Allowing this violence will just be a waste of one of the country’s best pieces of legislation,” Tañada added.
