Erin Tañada laments killing of 9 farmers in Sagay City
Former Quezon 4th District Representative Erin Tañada lamented the killing of nine farmers by hired gunmen of Hacienda Nene in Sagay City in Negros Occidental last October 20.
The Quezon politiko said the killing is a recurring problem among Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARB).
“I am disheartened by the news of the deaths of 9 ARBs in Negros yesterday,” Tañada said.
“This is not the first time that farmers have lost their lives trying to gain possession of the lands awarded to them, and I fear it won’t be the last. This is a persistent problem in the implementation of agrarian reform,” he added.
Tañada said killings like the one in Sagay City will continue to occur as long as farmers cannot till their own land
“Agricultural development should be anchored on farmers being able to own the land they till, and decide on the interventions necessary to improve their productivity. This is the way to realize sustainable and equitable growth in the countryside–the spirit animating the Agrarian Reform Program,” he explained.
