Ralph Recto: Transfer to NP is ‘return of prodigal son’
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said his transfer from Liberal Party to Nacionalista Party is like the “return of the prodigal son.”
Recto’s grandfather Claro M. Recto and his father Rafael Recto were NP members.
The Batangas politiko ran under NP when he first ran for senator in 1992.
“I will continue to be independent-minded in the Senate, collaborating with the executive when there is common ground, and opposing policies when they will hurt our people and country,” Recto said.
LP stalwart and Marikina 2nd District Representative Miro Quimbo said he understood why the Rectos transferred to NP.
“As elections draw closer, the pressure for many of our members in the LP to transfer to friendly parties will be even more significant. While we understand how ‘political realities’ influence a politician’s decision, I cannot hide my sadness when a member leaves us. I understand them but it is truly saddening specially since most of those left in LP have been through hell and back by now,” Quimbo said.
