Santiago City now under state of calamity due to El Nino, typhoon onslaughts
The “Sangguniang Panlungsod” (SP) of Santiago City, Isabela has placed the area in a state of calamity following the severe effects of the El Nino phenomenon and strong typhoons “Karen” and “Lawin” in its agricultural sector.
The SP passed the resolution Tuesday, November 22 after report from the City Agriculture Office of cumulative agricultural damages of more than P100 million.
SP member Arlene Alvarez – Reyes, Committee Chairman on Agriculture, said the declaration of the state of calamity is imperative so that the city government can utilize the calamity fund to assist the affected Santiagueno farmers.
And while there is forthcoming aid from the Department of Agriculture, the city government needs to augment the support that are being provided to the affected farmers, the lady politiko stressed.
