Tapos ang usapan: SC upholds cancellation of Mayor Ilagan’s COC
The Supreme Court (SC) has affirmed the cancellation of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of accused rapist, former Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas Mayor Jay Ilagan.
With this, the SC threw out the petition for certiorari of Ilagan who challenged the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) after it cancelled the COC that he filed on October 15, 2015.
Because of the cancellation of the COC, the Comelec annuled Ilagan’s proclamation as mayor following his win in 2016 elections.
The Comelec acted on the petition of former Vice Mayor Henry Laqui to cancel Ilagan’s COC on the ground of material misrepresentation of his eligibility since he became a fugitive from justice in connection with rape and human trafficking charges against him.
Ilagan surrendered before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) last January 2016.
