Undaunted by the prospect of losing votes in the mayoralty elections, re-electionist Angeles City mayor Edgardo Pamintuan has ordered a crackdown against drivers and owners of colorum tricycles operating in the city.
Pamintuan has ordered the city’s traffic unit to arrest the drivers of and impound unmarked private tricycles caught plying the city roads.
“In the meantime (while still applying for permits and licenses), don’t allow them to ply the streets,” Pamintuan ordered traffic chief Dan Concepcion, as quoted by Punto! Central Luzon.
The mayor said he has received numerous complaints about the operation of these illegal tricycles that only add up to the congestion of the local major roads and competing unfairly with those that have legal franchises.
“We should prevent them from plying their routes because it is really illegal,” Pamintuan stressed.
In cases such as road accidents, he noted that colorum tricycle drivers often managed to escape because of the lack of identifying marks on their vehicles.
The mayor said tricycles without identifying marks will be apprehended even if they are privately owned.
Pamintuan is seeking his third term in next year’s elections against incumbent vice mayor Vicky Vega and Sen. Lito Lapid.
