Drug users should have PhilHealth benefits, too, says Lani Mercado
Cavite 2nd District Rep. Lani Mercado-Revilla is pushing for a legislation that would grant affordable rehabilitation and treatment for drug users.
In her bill, the former actress proposed that drug dependents be provided with medical benefits by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth.
“While law enforcement against drug users and drug pushers must be implemented, the rehabilitation of the users is equally important,” Mercado said in a PNA report.
The Cavite lawmaker noted that around 1.7 million Filipinos are hooked on drugs and other illegal substances.
Under the proposed measure, drug dependency treatment shall be included in the benefit package of PhilHealth.
The treatment would include rehabilitation for the drug user, including room and boarding expenses, and services of medical professionals, prescription drugs, and other necessities.
Medical services currently covered by PhilHealth include only dialysis treatment, heart surgery, Caesarian births and chemotherapy, among others.
