May pinaghuhugutan? Pampanga mayor ‘elbows’ rival, calls him ‘traitor’

Nov 10, 2015 @ 15:55

San Simon, Pampanga mayor Leonora Simbulan-Wong could not just bring herself to shake the hands of her former ally-turned-rival even in the presence of Gov. Lilia Pineda.

Wong, according to a local paper Headline Gitnang Luzon, tried to hit Concepcion village chairman Sonny Simbulan with an elbow when Pineda asked them to reconcile and shake each other’s hands.

The commotion took place on November 9 during the turnover ceremonies of new patrol jeeps to Concepcion village officials at the provincial Capitol.

“Hindi ko kaya iyon, kasi masyado akong totoo. Kaya noong pahawakan ni Nanay, hindi ko hinawakan kasi tingin ko sa kanya (Simbulan) isa siyang traidor,” Wong was quoted as saying by Headline Gitnang Luzon.

“Nanay” is what local officials and residents fondly call Pineda.

“Baka kasi kung hinawakan ko, mahawaan pa ako. Contagious ‘yan. Ayoko siyang hawakan baka mahawaan pa ako,” the irate mayor said of Simbulan.

Simbulan is challenging the re-electionist Wong in next year’s elections.

Wong pointed out that she is just being true to herself and her feelings, so when Pineda asked her to shake hands with Simbulan, she tried to hit him with her elbow. In the face.

Luckily for Simbulan, he wasn’t hit.

Wong recounted that Simbulan was once her political associate. When she was elected mayor, she pulled strings so Simbulan could become the president of the Liga ng mga Barangay.

But Simbulan broke away and joined another political party and is now running for mayor against her.

Wong stressed she cannot take the “political betrayal” done by Simbulan.

“I am not like other traditional politicians who take a smile even at the face of their political foes,” she said.
Simbulan, on the other hand, said Wong was not a “good sport”.

“Gusto ni Governor Pineda, magkamay kami. Wala munang pulitika. Kakamay sana ako, pero ang ginawa niya sinubukan niya akong sikuhin,” Simbulan said.
