Castelo proposes ban on single-door PUBs
While others propose the redeployment of double-decker buses along Edsa, Quezon City 2nd District Rep. Winston Castelo said he has a better idea to untangle traffic in major roads: ban single-door public utility buses (PUBs).
Castelo explained single-door PUBs slow down the loading and unloading of passengers, contributing to the snail-paced movement of vehicles in the roads.
In a statement, the chairman of the House committee on Metro Manila Development cited Department Order 97-1097 of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) requiring all Metro Manila bus firms “to acquire and field public buses with two doors for easier entry and exit of passengers.”
However, Castelo lamented that despite the DOTC order, buses with single doors, mostly reconditioned units from China, still ply Metro Manila streets.
He recommended to the DOTC and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to require bus firms to retrofit their single-door bus units with two doors to provide easier and faster access to passengers.
“There must be a change of policy to stress the comfort and faster mobility of passengers with at least 5,000 buses plying the Metro Manila routes at any given time,” Castelo said.
