Jul 26, 2015 @ 5:46

To promote a healthy lifestyle, Bontoc, Mt. Province Mayor Franklin Odsey has enjoined municipal employees to join a weight-reduction contest similar to “The Biggest Loser” reality game show.

Odsey said the municipal government, through the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC), initiated the contest in line with the Department of Health’s (DOH) “Belly Gud for Health” program.

According to Odsey, the contest will run this month until December, wherein the participants will undergo a six-month healthy diet and physical activity interventions to achieve their desirable waist circumference.

The normal desirable waist circumference for male is 90 centimeters and 80 centimeters for female.

The first five achievers will receive cash prizes from the Office of the Mayor.

Odsey said interested participants may register to the Provincial Sports Development Office where their weight and waist measurement will be taken.

A monthly monitoring and recording of the participants’ waist circumference will be made to monitor their progress.

The participants are given the choice which proper healthy diet and regular exercises to reduce weight and trim down their waistline, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Wilfred Bilog said.

He also stressed that participants are discouraged from taking slimming drugs, products and procedures to avoid any possible complications or adverse reactions.

The contest is also in line with the celebration of the Nutrition Month this July with the theme, “Timbang Iwasto, sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo.”

Odsey cited medical reports noting that obesity is a serious health concern as it is strongly associated with the development of non-communicable diseases.

“The greater the waist circumference, the higher risk of a person to acquire diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle-related diseases,” the mayor pointed.
