Danilo Suarez: Creation of artificial rice shortage ‘unacceptable’

Apr 14, 2018 @ 20:43

Quezon 3rd District Representative Danilo Suarez, in his Manila Standard column, said creating an artificial rice shortage “is unacceptable.”

The Quezon politiko made the statement in response to Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr’s accusation that National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Jason Aquino created an artificial rice shortage.

“To me, the creation of an artificial rice shortage is unacceptable. Whether or not there is real rice shortage, this issue should not be ignored because of its threat to national food security,” Suarez said.

Aquino later clarified there is only a low supply of affordable rice.

Suarez said he is concerned rice traders will exploit the shortage of affordable rice.

“I fear that the shortage of affordable rice will be taken advantage of by the rice traders, to the detriment of the Filipino consumers, most especially the poorest of the poor. We are lucky that the President took the initiative to talk to primary rice traders, and gave the rice importation his go signal,” he said.
