Gov Mandanas: Seasonal closure of Balayan Bay key in biodiversity conservation
Batangas Governor Dodo Mandanas highlighted the seasonal closure of Balayan Bay during the Verde Island Passage Marine Key Biodiversity Summit last April 25 in Batangas City.
Various stakeholders from the province, Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (ECOFISH Project), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) attended the event which discussed the accomplishments of the five-year marine biodiversity conservation project in Balayan Bay.
Mandanas said the 22-day annual ban on commercial fishing in Balayan Bay has been key in the conservation of the area.
The Batangas politiko emphasized the importance of of environmental preservation and sustainable livelihoods.
The seasonal closure in Balayan Bay will go on until 2020.
