Kalabaw pa more! San Agustin, Cagayan being eyed as PH carabao cross-breeding capital (Luzon)
To further diversify the carabao stocks and herds in the country, the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) is mulling the possibility of turning San Agustin town in Cagayan into the nation’s carabao cross-breeding capital.
PCC Cagayan Valley regional director Franklin Rellien said carabao stocks in San Agustin, when interbreed with native herds, produce new carabao breeds.
San Agustin has a total of 4,828 carabaos, which are used in plowing fields and producing milk.
The milk is sold to a town cooperative, which in turn processes and sells it to the local market.
“We have seen how healthy the crossbred carabaos are and how they perform in field work,” he said during the Nuang Festival held in the town last September 26 to28.
