Cavite solon “disheartened” some LP members abandoned Mar for Duterte
In all his years in politics, Cavite 4th District Rep. Elpidio Barzaga, Jr. appeared, until now, not used to having turncoats in the country’s political scene.
Barzaga has let out a tirade against several members of the Liberal Party (LP) in Davao whom he said abandoned their standard-bearer, Mar Roxas, in favor of Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
He finds it “disheartening”.
“It is very disheartening to hear that these party mates of Secretary Mar have abandoned him. As party members, they were expected to support the party’s candidates,” the Cavite lawmaker was quoted in a Philippine Star report.
Although the vice president of the National Unity Party (NUP), Barzaga has openly declared his support to the candidacy of Roxas.
He did not name names but Barzaga said these LP members were just a minority when President Aquino was elected in 2010.
When Aquino came into power, these politicians were in a rush to transfer to the new ruling party, he said.
This habit of jumping to other political parties does not speak well of the country’s political system, he pointed out.
“Sad to say, we still have a weak political party system. It is always a party of convenience and personalities and not of principles,” Barzaga lamented.
He stressed that politicians, regardless of party affiliations, tend to support the more popular presidential candidate, of course, for their own personal and political benefits.
Before being elected to Congress in 2007, Barzaga was a three-term mayor of Dasmarinas, Cavite.
