Rep. Antonino to Comelec: Declare Nueva Ecija an election hotspot
Nueva Ecija 4th District Rep. Rodolfo Antonino is asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to declare the province an election hotspot.
Antonino made the call after the killing of a former municipal councilor of Quezon town on October 5, the latest in the escalating cases of political violence in the province.
This year alone, the lawmaker said 14 persons have been killed and seven others were wounded; not a single case has been resolved by police.
Eleven of the incidents took place this year, including six last month, Antonino added.
Earlier, Antonino claimed most of the victims were opponents of outgoing Gov. Aurelio Umali, Jr.
On October 5, two men shot dead Daniel Lonzarida in Barangay Bertese in Quezon town, where he served as councilor from 2010 to 2013.
His wife is the incumbent chairwoman of Barangay Bertese while his daughter is planning to run for councilor next year.
Quezon is a known bailiwick of former Gov. Tomas Joson III.
