House honors actor Eddie Garcia

Oct 8, 2015 @ 3:44

Veteran actor and film director Eddie Garcia will be honored by Congress for his invaluable contribution to Philippine cinema.

1BAP party-list Rep. Silvestre Bello III said the 86-year-old actor will be given honors in November when Congress resumes session.

While Garcia is still in good health, Bello said it is “imperative that we recognize him now so he can enjoy in relative good health the appreciation and recognition of his fellow Filipinos in general and the Philippine Congress in particular.”

“He has indeed done us proud as a people and as a nation,” the lawmaker said in a statement.

Bello was the author of House Resolution No. 2355 seeking recognition of Garcia.  It was approved on October 5.

He did not say what citations will be given to the actor, but said it is “a modest gesture of appreciation of a grateful nation.”

Born Jesus Garcia Verchez, Garcia, the Bicolano actor known as “Manoy” started his movie career in 1949.

As of 2011, he has appeared in over 300 movies and is the only person in the Philippines inducted into the FAMAS Hall of Fame in three categories: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Director.

Before joining showbiz, Garcia was a member of the Philippine Scouts during World War II and was stationed as a military policeman in Okinawa, Japan.
