Belmonte rules out VP run
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. is no longer aspiring for vice presidency, even as running mate of Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Mar Roxas.
Instead, Belmonte reiterated that he is endorsing Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
“I just feel I’m past my prime. If I could run, I’d run with Mar (Roxas),” Belmonte was quoted as saying by the Philippine Star.
Belmonte is the LP vice chairman. He would most likely run for re-election as Quezon City 4th District representative and keep his speakership if Roxas wins.
At least three lawmakers- Reps. Douglas Hagedorn of Palawan, Miro Quimbo of Marikina and Jesus Eleandro Madrona of Romblon have called on Roxas to consider Belmonte as his vice presidential running mate.
Roxas has reportedly offered the vice presidential slot to Camarines Sur 3rd District Rep. Leni Robredo, who has since declined the offer.
