Drug pushers invading our town, bares Benguet mayor

Aug 20, 2015 @ 2:46

The mining town of Itogon, Benguet has attracted an unwelcome kind of visitors- pushers peddling “shabu”.

The town mayor, Victorio Palangdan, revealed that seven of the municipality’s nine villages now have serious problems on illegal drugs, with drug traffickers targeting miners.

“Small-scale miners are the main target of drug dealers for the reason that they have the money to pay out,” Palangdan said, as reported by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Palangdan said he has requested for additional law enforcers in the vicinity of mining areas to prevent drug pushers to sell shabu to small-scale miners.

He identified five of the seven drug-infested villages as Tuding, Ucab, Virac, Ampucao, and Loakan, where small-scale mining operations are located.

Palangdan also admitted having personally talked to suspected drug pushers in the town to ask them to stop their drug-peddling operations.

Itogon, a first-class municipality, depends on mining as its main source of income. It is estimated that the municipality hosts more than 500 small-scale mining outfits, with a total work force of 12,000.
