Benguet mayor: Gov’t deceiving us on power plant project

Aug 18, 2015 @ 2:50

Local officials of Kabayan town in Benguet led by Mayor Faustino Aquisan have expressed opposition to the construction of a 45-megawatt power plant in Nalatang River.

Faustino said the municipal government was not consulted concerning the Nalatang B hydroelectric power plant project.

“Ang nangyari kasi, kaming host community, parang naging 4th party lang. Walang transparency. Para kaming niloloko ng national government at nawala na ang autonomy naming LGU (local government unit),” Aquisan was quoted in a Sunstar article.

The town council is demanding the revocation of the contract awarded to the Philippine National Oil Company-Renewables Corporation (PNOC-RC) and its joint venture partner AboitizPower to develop the plant.

Instead, the municipal government wants it awarded to Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco).

But the Department of Energy (DoE) stuck to its decision.

Aquisan said they will ask President Aquino to intervene on the issue.

The Nalatang hydropower plant is a run-of-river hydropower plant, according to PNOC-RC. Construction is expected to be completed in 2019. #
