Erap unfazed by graft suit filed by market vendors

Aug 15, 2015 @ 6:07

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada shrugged off the graft case filed against him  by vendors of Quinta public market before the Office of the Ombudsman over the joint venture agreement signed by the local government with a private leasing company.

Estrada said he is confident that the case, filed last August 10, will not prosper due to lack of merit.

We did not enter into any illegal contract or arrangement on Quinta market and everything is above board,” he said.

The former President believes the market vendors are just going after him because they stand to lose the illegal perks which they used to enjoy prior to the signing of the new lease contract.

“[The vendors are] opposed to modernization and change,” he said.

In its 10-page complaint, the Manila Federation of public Market Vendors Association, Inc. accused Estrada and several other local government officials of graft for entering in a 25-year joint venture agreement with Marketlife Managment and Leasing Corporation (MMLC) for Quinta market.

The vendors argued that MMLC doesn’t have the necessary qualifications to manage and operate a public market for a long-term period.
