Batanes Guv Gato promotes cycling
Batanes Gov. Vicente Gato is encouraging his constituents to ride bicycles regularly not only as a form of physical exercise but also to help preserve the cleanliness of island-province.
A Philippine Navy officer for 24 years, Gato said he himself bikes around Basco town and nearby areas whenever he has time.
Gato personally heads the Provincial Nutrition and Health Committee, which has embarked on a campaign to promote cycling as a regular physical activity among the 16,000 residents of Batanes.
The long-time governor pointed out that even senior citizens and persons with disabilities can use bicycles as a regular exercise for their physical and mental health.
“We could prevent such health complications by doing regular exercises,” he said, adding that cycling is also an environment-friendly form of activity.
In 2012, Batanes received the highest distinction in nutrition, the National Nutrition Honor Award, from the National Nutrition Council, for its outstanding performance in nutrition program management.
