Cory Aquino statue unveiled in Butch Abad town

Jul 27, 2015 @ 3:06

A life-sized bronze statue of former President Corazon Aquino was installed at Basco, Batanes in recognition of her contribution to Ivatan communities, Batanes Rep. Henedina Abad said.

Abad led the blessing of the statue at Basco grandstand where local officials and Ivatan leaders paid tribute to the so-called ‘Icon of Philippine Democracy’.

The representative of the lone district of Batanes noted that it was Mrs. Aquino who switched on electric power in the island province on April 24, 1989 when she was the president.

“This is the least we can do to show our gratitude to the late former President for initiating electricity project in our province and for the selfless dedication she gave to our country,” Abad said.

Abad said the installation of the statue was endorsed by the National Heritage Commission to the Batanes Heritage Foundation Inc. in recognition of the former President’s legacy of providing electricity to Ivatan communities.

On April 24, 2010, exactly 21 years ago after Mrs. Aquino visited the province, her son, then presidential candidate Noynoy Aquino, went to Batanes to campaign, becoming the first presidential candidate to visit the island province.
